The Nerves Starter Kit is the evolution of the Goatmire 2025 e-ink badge. The goal is to provide a first-party hardware platform for the community, in a fun project-based format.

Features of the Nerves Starter Kit (NSK)

The Nerves Starter Kit is built around the Allwinner T113 chip, with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of onboard storage. Onboard sensors are connected to the I2C bus, which gives you an immediate set of hardware to start learning Nerves by writing drivers. The e-ink display is supported by the eink library, and a number of libraries are capable of drawing images to a buffer for rendering to the NSK.

Additionally, there is onboard WiFi and Bluetooth, plus an expandable GPIO header for interfacing with external hardware - a number of first-party expansion boards are already in development! Finally, a qwiic port is available for easy integration with third-party modules from Adafruit, SparkFun and other vendors.

The NSK runs about 8 hours on battery when active. Configured to wake and update once an hour, that stretches to roughly 30 days between charges. It comes with feet to stand on a desk or shelf, and a wall mount option for hanging it up.

Timeline

The Nerves Starter Kit is currently finalizing development. We have run several prototype batches, and are now finalizing the hardware, going through certification, and preparing for manufacturing. Assembly happens by hand at my office in Luxembourg, and we ship worldwide.

The NSK will be available for pre-order from October, with the first batch delivered by the end of the year.
